Boys of Summer 2014

This summer has been filled with fun and sun and the boys having a great time!  It is nearly time to come to a close so I wanted to share my favorite pictures of this summer!
 My beautiful boys.  So lucky.
My mama and I.  We are at my newest nephew's baby shower!  He is due to arrive in August and I can't wait to be an aunt again!
Kai is so loving and sweet.  I love these moments.
Kai's sweet smile on the 4th of July.
Gavy and my nephew, Aiden.  They are best friends and love each other so much.  They are waiting to watch the fireworks in this picture.
My brother Mike and I playing cornhole, while my nephew, Will, looks on.
Having a blast with my fam.
Mike, Aiden, and Gavy.  All the boys are improving on their swimming this year!
Nathan has made the most improvement.  He jumps from the diving board without a lifejacket and swims across the pool.  Amazing how big he he is.
The twins in their cool shades.  I ask to take a picture and this is what I get.  Hilarious.

CNM and a new job

I did it!!!  I passed my boards!  I have CNM after my name now!  And I didn't want to post anything before it was set in stone, but I have been hired at a small private practice!  I get to catch babies at a small hospital and I get the opportunity to know my patients.  I'm so lucky to have been offered this opportunity.  I can't wait to get started next month!!  So exciting!

Letter to my seven year old boy...

Dear Nathan,

How is it possible that you are seven?  Where has time gone?  I still see my tiny Nathan in my arms.  And now you are 47 lbs and taller than everyone in your class.  Time just seems to race by.  Especially this year because I missed a lot.  I cannot thank you and your brothers enough for going without Mama for awhile so that I could follow my dreams.  School is almost over for me now.  And you played a big part in getting me this far.  Thank you sweet boy.

You amaze me every, single, day.  First grade has been amazing for you.  I have never been prouder of you.  You are amazingly smart at Math and you have made such great strides in all areas of school.  Your speech therapist, Ms. Christina, doesn’t even think you need speech anymore.  You are no longer displaying signs of Autism.  You look, talk, and act like a seven-year-old boy.  You are amazing.  You have overcome so much.  You’ve lost teeth this year!  You’ve lost 4 so far and your adult teeth are coming in.  Looks like braces are in your future kiddo! J You tie your own shoes, shower, and dress yourself.  You look after your brothers and are amazing at video games.  You love Mario and Nintendo, which makes Daddy so proud!  I look at you sometimes and I wish that I could step back and hold you as a sweet baby again.  But then I see you interact with your neighborhood friends and my heart bursts with pride.  No one can tell you’ve ever had a speech delay.  No one can tell that you are any different than anyone else.  But I know you are different.  You are special in ways that no one else is.  You have the soul of someone much older.  You show so much compassion and empathy.  You are kind and thoughtful.  You still are a picky eater, but that’s ok.  Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are just fine with us!

Nathan Cole, the love I have for you is never-ending.  Until I draw my last breath, I will love you.  No matter what.  Happy birthday son.

 Love at first sight.
 My big boy.

Twin love

Along with the sibling arguments and fighting, there are moments of love. These pictures reminded me of their bond that will carry on throughout their lives.  Kai was sick and stayed home from preschool and he missed Gavin so much.  This was the reaction when Gav got home.

Time is slowing winding down

My road to CNM is almost complete.  Very soon, I will take finals and graduate.  Then take boards to finally become what I have been waiting for for so long.  I cannot even put into words what this feels like.  The words simply won't come.   I've come such a long way.  From the midwives guiding my hands as I did my first to now, when I feel completely comfortable handling deliveries on my own.  My hands have caught many babies.  My heart has been touched beyond belief.  I've seen grief and triumph.  I've seen sadness and tears of joy.  I've hugged mothers who have lost their babies and hugged fathers as they have cried on my shoulders with tears of joy.  I have learned that birth is fluid and ever-changing. One way of birth is not fit for everyone.  Babies come into this world the way that they are meant to and I am merely a witness to the amazing ability of women and families as they welcome new members to their families.  I've been humbled.  I've cried.  I've laughed.  I've internally panicked with an outward exterior calm.  My transition is slowly growing from Labor and Delivery RN to CNM.  My road is coming to a close with school.  My life is changing.  I'm so ready.

Letters to my four-year-old boys...

Dear Gavin,

How can you possibly be four years old?  Time just seems to go by so quickly. I’ve felt so guilty lately because I have missed so much of this past year.  School and work have drained mama.  Thankfully, I’m in my last semester and can hopefully come to some sort of routine soon.

You are so big and tall.  You weigh about 36 lbs!  You were finished with diapers last May.  You are now going to preschool full-time!  So you go every day for a couple of hours.  Your teacher’s name is Ms. Diane.  She is the same teacher that Nathan had.  She says that you are doing great and right on track for lots of things.  You can count to 10, know all the colors, and letters of the alphabet.  Your biggest asset is your communication skills.  You can talk to just about anyone and you do!  Everyone we pass in the grocery store,  you have to say “hi!!!” to.  It is adorable.  Your sweet blonde hair and bright blue eyes are just perfect.  Kai is in class with you and you like to take care of him because he is more behind on certain skills.  You also like to fight.  You and Kai wrestle and argue all the time!  And yet, I catch you in your sweet moments when you love on each other and my heart just melts.

You are so wonderful Gavin.  You are sweet and growing up so fast!  I find myself missing the baby days sometimes, but you are so much fun to watch grow.

Until next time, I will always love you,

Interview with a 4 year old, Gavin Quinn:

What is your favorite animal? A pet

What is your favorite color? Blue

What is your favorite movie? Woody and Buzz

Who is your favorite person? Daddy

Who are your brothers? Kai and Nathan

What does mommy do? She takes care of babies.

What does daddy do? Works at Honda.

What do you want to be when you grow up? Honda worker

What do you love?  Daddy

Dear Kai,

My sweet Kai-bear, you are adorable and amazing.  I can’t believe you are four years old.  Time goes so quickly and I feel sad that I have missed a lot of this year due to work and school.  Thankfully, school is almost over.  I cannot thank my three boys enough for spending so much time without their mama so that I could follow my dreams.

You have grown so much!  You weigh about 35lbs.  You were done with diapers last May!  You enjoyed your reward of a Chuck E. Cheese trip.  You go to preschool full-time now due to your speech delay.  We are currently working on your communication with others.  You tend to not look people in the eye when you are speaking to them.  You also become so fixated on a conversation that you could just go on all day!  Some of these are signs of Autism and we are wondering if that is what is going on.  Thankfully you have a great preschool teacher, Ms. Diane, and a great speech therapist, Ms. Christina.  These are the same wonderful ladies who helped Nathan so much, so we are hoping you will just continue to make progress.  You are doing better with letter and color recognition and are working on counting.  Every day you make progress and we hear good things from the teachers about how well you are doing.  Gavin is in class with you.  Thankfully you get along better in class than you do at home!!  Sometimes you guys fight like cats and dogs.  Although there are other times, when you both are so sweet to each other.  It makes me smile because it reminds me of your strong twin link.

Kai, I know that you may struggle with school and with communication, but I want you to know that you are the most kind-hearted and amazing little boy.  You are always telling me that you love me, giving mama big kisses, and saying how beautiful I am.  Everyone who knows you raves about how sweet you are.  I adore you.

Interview with a 4 year old, Kai Nicholas:

What is your name? Kai, I mean Kai Nicholas (mom do you know that you are a grown up?) :)

How old are you? 5,6 old.

Who is your best friend? Nathan

What is your favorite food? Hotdogs and some goldfish and pretzels and strawberries

What is your favorite animal? Beary

What is your favorite color? Blue

What is your favorite movie? Remy the mouse

Who is your favorite person? Mommy

Who are your brothers? Nathan and Gavin

What does mommy do? She works. You go on elevators but there is no ice cream.  There is some at the barn.  Yum.

What does daddy do? He works at Honda.

What do you want to be when you grow up? A mommy, so I can do stuff like you.

What do you love? Mommy, I love you.  I have favorite things, like friends. But mommy.  I like snacks too.
