Start of week 2, inches lost, and new kicks!

I started week 2 of Couch to 5K today! My run went well and I felt great afterward. I could get used to this! It was a perfect fall day today. Leaves were falling, the perfect music came on my iPod, and all was well with the world. I find myself looking forward to running after Brandon gets home from work. It gets me out of the house and off Mommy duty.

This past weekend, Brandon and I went to a running store and had our strides measured (he is training with me) to get the perfect shoe. They put me on a treadmill and used a camera to capture my running style. I needed a light stability shoe and decided on the Nike Structure 13. I really love these shoes. My feet did not hurt today at all!

In other news, I finally measured myself! Since starting my new workout routine (started with the 30 day shred and now onto the Couch to 5K), I have lost:

2.5 inches in my waist
1 inch on each thigh
2.5 inches in my hips
2 inches in my chest
1 inch in each arm

That is a total of 9 inches! I'm really just so proud of myself right now. I haven't felt this good about my level of fitness since high school.

Week one Done!

I finished my first week of Couch to 5K!

It is going well so far. I'm still having some trouble with pain in my side, so I'm hoping that gets better.

My feet are starting to hurt too so I'm going to get new shoes this weekend.

No new weight loss yet. But I'm feeling like my body is changing.

Couch to 5K

So as I promised myself, after the 30 (er...60) day shred, I would begin the Couch to 5K program.

Yesterday was my first day and holy cow, I am sore today! I'm using an app for the iPhone. It is awesome in that it allows you to play your own music and it cuts into the music at the appropriate times telling you when to walk and when to run. It is very motivating and easy to use.

So for week 1, it has me running every other day. I run for 1 minute and then walk for 1.5 minutes. That interval repeats itself 8 times. It SOUNDS really easy, but it wasn't. I've never been much of a runner. In fact, in high school, I would do every possible thing I could to get out of running in gym class. It was just NOT my thing. So I'm skeptical that I can actually do this, but willing to give it 100% effort.

The program lasts for 9 weeks. So hopefully I get to the point where I can run a 5K without feeling like I am going to die! My first race is December 24th (what was I thinking with Christmas Eve?!). I'm really excited about it though!

The 10 great things about having twins

It seems as though I have really neglected to mention some of the totally awesome aspects of having twins. Looking back through some of my blog posts, I noticed a theme of complaining.

First let me say, that having twins IS a lot of hard work and the only reason that I write about the more difficult aspects of parenting twins is that I like to be honest. Often times, people idealize having twins and don't realize the difficulties that twin moms face. I write this blog and it is mostly a personal diary of my life so that I don't forget anything about my children's lives. But the blog is also a source of information for moms. Moms who aren't yet moms and are going through infertility. IVF moms. IUI moms. Moms of kiddos with speech delays. Attachment parenting moms. Moms looking for information on circumcision, breastfeeding, co-sleeping, and vaccinations. Expectant moms of twins. And current moms of twins. So I really want to give it straight to these moms. I don't sugarcoat. :)

However, having said all that, I do really want to share some of the joyous parts of having twins. Because really there is no greater joy.

Having twins is awesome because:

10.) It has made me a better, more engaged mother. I can't "phone it in" with the babies. I play more. I am a more active mother and better for it.

9.) I feel like Super-Mom every time I go out. The amazement in people's voices when they see that I have twins is pretty cool. People are generally very sweet to a mom with twins. It is nice to hear that I am doing a good job.

8.) I get to talk about my homebirth often! A lot of people ask about their birth. "Were they early?" "Did you have to have a c-section?" I have fun when I talk about their birth. It makes me proud.

7.) I am far more relaxed now. I let things go more often than not now. I realize that as long as we all made it through the day with minimal tears and full bellies, life is good.

6.) They entertain each other. Most of the time, they get along great. Playing together and laughing at each other.

5.) I am a part of something bigger. I have something in common with twin moms and other moms of multiples. It is nice to belong to a group like that. I feel a solidarity when I see other moms of twins.

4.) I appreciate the passage of time. With Nathan, I wanted to keep him a baby forever! With the babies, I love watching them grow up and get bigger. It is a sense of pride for me that we have made it this far!

3.) I love the different relationships I have with each of them. I know that Gavin likes me to stroke the top of his head while he nurses. I know that Kai likes me to cuddle him close on my arm at night.

2.) I am never bored. Every second of every day, I have someone wanting to have fun with Mommy. Exhausting...yes. Fun....yes.

1.) Double the love. I love when they wake up from nap (I rock them to sleep and hold them both during their naps) and they are both happy. They look at me with such love that my heart feels like it will burst.

Letters to my sons

Dear Gavin,

9 months old today! October has arrived and slightly cooler weather came with it. Although this week it has been in the 80s again. This year has been so hot!

You are growing and changing every day. To me, you are starting to look like a toddler already! You are so big. You pull up on everything. You walk all around the furniture and push the firetruck all around. It is just a matter of time before you start walking on your own. You have started to wake up a lot more at night again. I am wondering if you are going through a growth spurt. Every two hours at night is getting a little crazy! One great thing that happened this month is your new love of solid food! Finally you are enjoying food! It is great to be able to give you something other than Mama's milk. One not-so-good thing that has happened this month is your fights with Kai. You both have figured out that you can get what you want by hitting the other! It is so sad! You are bigger than Kai, so you like to throw your weight into it. I'm sure that you will continue on fighting until you are teenagers! It's ok though, I grew up with brothers, so I know how to handle you two!

9 months have come and gone. Winter is right around the corner and your first birthday is quickly approaching. I love you so much Gav!

Always,

Mama

------------------------

Dear Kai,

Hello sweetheart! You are 9 months old today! It is October and this is my favorite time of year. I love pulling out all the fall weather clothes. Although we haven't had much use of them yet. It is still so hot here!

You are my sweet, snuggly boy. You still wake up a million times a night. I am so hoping that that lets up soon. Between you and Gav, Mama doesn't get much sleep! You now have four teeth! You are loving little bites of food now too. I give you little pieces of bread and other soft foods. You crawl right over to me whenever I am eating something and wait with your mouth open. You remind me of a tiny, baby bird. So cute. Sometimes, both you and Gavin want food at the same time and it is hilarious! Speaking of crawling, you are so fast! I have never seen a baby crawl as fast as you! You pull up on things all over the house. Your favorite places to hang out are halfway in the dryer and halfway in the toilet. I really have to keep an eye on you! You and Gavin have started fighting! You pull his hair and he pushes you around. It is hard to keep a straight face at your little squabbles.

Your first birthday is right around the corner! Halloween and Thanksgiving are coming up soon too! This is a great time of year! I love you Kai-bear!

Always,

Mama

Update on the Shred

So, I'm still on the shred program. I have taken a couple weeks off due to mastitis and the flu. But the shred has actually inspired me to watch my diet as well. I actually am not really eating anything different, just smaller portions.

So in total, I have lost 13 lbs so far! I can't believe it! It feels great!

I really need to measure myself in inches again and take some pictures. That will be coming soon.
